The subjects are taken from the myths and legends of the ancient inhabitants of Oceania, that is stories told using basic signs that become almost a logo. Combining the ancient symbols with present day shapes and colours, I offer the past a new opportunity (that is a new language) to come to light. It is true that we should protect the ancient ethnic cultures of Polynesia to deliver them unimpaired to new generations; but I'm also convinced that thanks to the easiness of communications and the virtual closeness of far away realities, we should try to make an effort and mix past and present cultures so that they can mutually influence each other, in order to make room for new expressions and a revitalised contemporary creativity. I wish I could carry out this "melange" without any risk of profanation and with a great discretion. I'm deeply convinced that I can obtain the approval of the ancient deities, the old tattoo masters from the Marquise Islands and the Sages that could read the Rongorongo tables. The artworks are carried out using acrylic paints on canvas. |
